Grandma’s Crock Pot Round Steak

So as you all know, I received a new crock pot for Christmas.  Yes,  still love it and highly recommend it to everyone.  The “programmable” concept is brilliant.  No more overcooked meals by the time Mom gets home, or if something comes up and we don’t stop it in time.

My Mom joked that this is probably the only dish my Grandmother used to make in her crock pot, but it was definitely a good one.  It’s simple, as most of Grandma’s recipes are, but full of flavor.  It’s great comfort food for a winter day.  I simply made the “No Yolks” noodles that I love when I got home from work.

My Grandma always made this with round steak.  I’m not all that familiar with cuts of meat (I suppose being a food blogger, I should… ) but I had a 2 lb roast in the freezer that I figured would be just as good.  I was right.  However, I’ll admit (and this is hard to do for all of those out there watching their weight..), I think my roast was really lean and a fattier cut of meat might have been a little more moist & flavorful.  I know… gasp!

I also recommend cutting those potatoes thin.  Any slices that were too thick were still a bit crunchy, even after 10 hours.

Grandma’s Crock Pot Round Steak

serves: 6

1 round steak, cut into pieces (I used a 2 lb roast)
3 large potatoes, cut into slices
2 cans mushrooms, save water from 1 can
1 can cream of mushroom soup (I used the 98% fat free)
2 small onions
carrots, optional (I left these out.. bad Margo!)

Place vegetables and meat into crock pot.  Mix water from mushrooms and soup together.  Pour into crock pot and mix.

Cook on low for 10 hours. Serve as-is or over noodles.
